Are the neutralizing antibodies a response to the Chinese hamster ovary cells that are used to produce interferons? Is the use of CHO cells the reason why we experience the flu-like side-effects. It was my belief that it was the interferons themselves that caused the side-effects.
The flu like side effects are caused by the interferons themselvesThey are made in either bacteria (non-glycosylating) or mammalian cells (glycosylating). Therefore the chinese hamster ovary cells can add hamster type sugars (glycosylation). These may be recognised by the immune system and cause neutralisation. There are no chinese hamster ovary cells present in the beta infereons used for treatment.Likewise the bacterial version can be recognised because it does not have the sugars and neutralisation antibodies can be formed.
Do you think PwMS should take omega 3 as well? I think it's been shown to help with the integrity of the blood/brain barrier and an article in the journal of neuroscience this week said it protects damaged nerve cells, but a trial in Norway on RRMS showed that it had no beneficial effects on disease activity.
At present there is no evidence that omega-3 does or does not benefit PPMS. The work on nerve damage and omega-3 was performed by people in our department in nerve injury models. We have some supportive data in experimental models of omega-3, which would also suggest that relapes were not the major target for therapy. If it was so great on blood brain barrier function you would expect an effecton relapsing disease.However we need trial data to say one way or the other. I am hopeful that we will see such studies soon.

So genes do change to take account of environmental factors then where does that leave the inuit peoples who have low incidence of MS and a shortage of sunlight? If vitamin D is a factor the Swedish migrant study would have had different results, would it not? It was my belief that it was the interferons themselves that caused the side-effects."No NABs are to the IFNbeta and not to the CHO cells; IFNbeta-1a in Avonex and Rebif are both made in CHO cells and the rate of NABs is very different; <5% for Avonex and 12-30% for Rebif.

There is some evidence outside of MS that suggests omega 3 fatty acids may be of benefit for health. Most preparations of omega-3 fatty acids come from fish, which adherence to the supplements poor due to the fishy taste.
