The Publication Fool

As of today all publications generated from UK government funded science have to be published in an "open source" publication.

Established publishing houses will be saying thank you very much. The Government has dished out a wodge of cash to Universities to cover this cost, which is between £1,000-5,000 a pop. The big hitting journals will charge the most.  I suspect the Universities will now start rationing which papers can be published so that the coffers do not get drained.

Perhaps rather than flush money down the toilet they could have set up a publishing site. British Research one, two or three to reflect quality, core funding for the infrastructure and make it free to publish there; but that would upset the other publishers. The National Institutes for Health are also doing this.

Sad but true!
