  1. Dear NDG,

The Internet tells me that a response is 'with other people's coal' - is that correct?

  2. "First footing" (or the "first foot" in the house after midnight) is still common across Scotland. To ensure good luck for the house the first foot should be a dark (haired) male, and he should bring with him symbolic pieces of coal, and a wee dram of whisky. The dark male bit is believed to be a throwback to the Viking days, when a big blonde stranger arriving on your door step with a big axe meant big trouble, and probably not a very happy New Year!

    1. No, it's because the Vikings always turned up with Spam, instead of useful coal. Contrary to popular belief, it was in fact the Vikings who brought Spam to the UK:

    1. A born and bred Londoner we always did the coal thing, unfortunately it became a smokeless zone, no fires, no coal and no mines. Sad eh

    2. In NY you are not permitted to sell firewood for this reason. Hence the stores sell decorative logs.

  4. I assume this is a system of a down reference? I do have some of their material on my running iPod.
